The Furious Fall of '75: Actions Leading to the Battle of Great Bridge and the Burning of Norfolk

  • Wednesday, December 13, 2017
  • 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
  • MacArthur Memorial Visitor Center Theater

Besides Saint Paul’s Church, there are few pre-Revolutionary War structures in downtown Norfolk, even though it was established as a town and port in 1705. On December 13, Jon Stull, a docent from the Great Bridge Battlefield and Waterways History Foundation, will tell us why, as he shares the story of events that led up to the Battle of Great Bridge 242 years ago and the subsequent burning of Norfolk. He will focus on answering three questions:

Why would colonists of a prosperous British colony fire on His Majesty’s troops?

Why did Virginia’s first land battle of the American Revolution occur at Great Bridge?

How did it make a difference to our area, our state, and the broader Revolutionary War effort?
