The Occupation of Norfolk, 1862-1865

  • Wednesday, November 09, 2016
  • 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
  • MacArthur Memorial Visitor Center Theatre

The City of Norfolk and Gosport Navy Yard changed flags twice at the beginning of the American Civil War, before returning to Federal hands in May 1862. How did the fledgling Confederacy contribute to the birth of the modern Steel Navy when they constructed the ironclad frigate, CSS Virginia, from the burned-out hull of the steam frigate USS Merrimac, sitting at Gosport’s damaged dry dock? What was life like in occupied Norfolk? Please join us on November 9, when Col. Buck Liberto, USMC (ret.) tells us more!
